              Spanish Survival Skills For Registered Dietitian Nutritionists:

        Hable Español Con Sus Pacientes (Speak Spanish with your patients)

 

This activity has been approved by the Commission on Dietetic Registration for 8 CPEUs.

 

  • Do you feel frustrated when you are trying to work with a Spanish-speaking patient due to an inability to understand and speak Spanish?

  • Have you spent hours using translator services when counseling your Spanish-speaking clients?

  • Have you ever wanted to learn Spanish, but could not find a course that fit into your schedule?

  • Have you felt limited in your ability to get hired by an organization where the ability to speak Spanish was required or preferred?

 

In this 8-hour course designed specifically for RDNs, you will learn to speak, read, and write Spanish with an emphasis on vocabulary, grammar, and conversation. 

 

Course Features:

  • 8 1-hour sessions or 6 1.5 hour sessions of private/individual instruction per week 

  • English/Spanish RD forms and handouts for you to use in your practice 

  • RD vocabulary e.g. foods, beverages, health, medical Spanish

  • Spanish vocabulary and phrases lesson each week, including verb conjugations and pronouns

  • Interactive role playing (RDN/patient-client) and practice conversation

  • Homework assignments focused on applying skills learned 

  • MP3 recordings of each session. 

  • Transcripts of each session (optional add on). 

  • Online resources to improve skill building

  • Option to learn in person (for NYC area RDs) or online via Skype for distance learning

  • Field trip/siesta in a Spanish restaurant for lunch or dinner upon completion of 6 course hours (price of food and beverages not included in the course fee).

Pricing:

Various pricing options are available. I also currently offer individual one-hour sessions.This is an option if you would like to get started, are looking for greater flexibility in scheduling, or simply want to experience one session. If you decide after the first session that you would like to enroll in the full course, you can pay the balance (course fee minus the cost of the individual session).

 

 Group sessions are also available to RDs in the New York City area. I am also available to work with Nutrition departments at local hospitals and Dietetic Internships to bring this course onsite as a lunch and learn activity. Please contact me for arrangements. Special discounted rates can be arranged for groups greater than 10 people. The course can be taken as many times as desired. The level of the course increases as your Spanish language proficiency increases. CPE certificates of attendance will be awarded upon completion of the course/session package you sign up for. 

 

Rates

These rates are introductory rates. Rates are subject to change due to demand and a standard annual cost of living increase of 3%. 

 

Full 8 week one on one course  - $ 640

 

6-week 1-hour and 20 minute group course for RDs/RDNs: (NYC area residents only): $ 347 per person

 

6-week  1 hour and 20 minute group course for Dietetic Interns (NYC area residents only) $297 per person (student

discount). 

 

Remember that this course is a tax deductable professional expense. Some RD settings reimburse for 

continuing education. 

 

Upon completion of an interest questionnaire, each participant will be presented with a syllabus for the course, which will include area of focus for vocabulary and a grammar lesson/topic each week. Here is a example of what a lesson plan for a 60-minute session would look like:

 

Week 1:  Introductions and review of goals and areas of interest - 10 minutes

               Grammar and vocabulary:  New vocabulary: 24 hour meal recall. Nouns - masculine and                           feminine gender / -ar, -er, -ir verbs (regular and irregular) in the present tense. 

                - 25 minutes  

               Conversation: Practice conversation using nouns and present tense verb conjugations related to                 area of interest (e.g. diabetes nutrition, digestive health, weight management, etc.) - 20 minutes

               Homework assignment and Q & A, summary - 5 minutes
