Being diagnosed with lactose intolerance in college and IBS years later, combined with years of training and experience as a nutritionist gives Ilene the understanding and sensitivity to work with people with digestive conditions. When you come for a consultation for a digestive concern, keeping a food diary will be helpful to begin to discover which foods trigger the symptoms you are experiencing. Bringing recent lab work with you is helpful in addressing any nutritional deficiencies. Ilene will provide you with suggestions for alternative food sources and recipes you enjoy as a substitute for foods that are intolerable to you. Ilene may also suggest certain restaurants and supermarkets in your local area that carry the types of foods you need, so you will leave with many positive options!

Ilene has used the FODMAPs approach for IBS successfully with several clients who have experienced relief and/or resolution of their symptoms. The FODMAPs diet is an emerging and evidenced-based dietary intervention developed by researchers at Monash University in Australia that has proven success in 75% of patients with IBS. FODMAPs is an acronym for Fermentable, Oligo-, Di- and Mono-saccharides and Polyols, which are groups of carbohydrates that ferment raplidly in the gut causing gastrointestinal symptoms in people with IBS. Ilene works with clients with IBS using the FODMAPs approach and provides expert guidance through all phases of the diet.

After struggling with unresolved digestive issues for a couple of years, I reached out to Ilene for guidance. Based on my symptoms, she recommended the FODMAPs approach, which has been proven to help those with IBS. Ilene coached me through the FODMAPs approach, which is very complex, regimented and precise. This is not a diet you can follow on your own since it's new, many foods are still being scientifically tested for problematic carbohydrates and there is so much conflicting information on the internet. Thanks to Ilene's expertise with the FODMAPs approach, we were able to determine just which foods were problematic, and at what thresholds and in which combinations. Now armed with this information, I can enjoy food without any symptoms! ~ Nutrition client
