Banana Blueberry smoothie

August 21, 2013

Smoothies are one of my favorite snacks. They are such a dose of good health, jam packed with vitamins, minerals and fiber. Consistency means a lot when it comes down to a smoothie. Did you ever have a smoothie that was prepared with ice? Initially it tastes delicious, but after a few minutes the ice melts and the smoothie becomes watery. The best tip for a top-notch smoothie is to use frozen fruits. You can buy frozen organic berries at the health food store or many supermarkets. Many people wonder if you are still getting all the nutrients in a frozen fruit. The answer is yes! Fruits are frozen when they are fresh and ripe, maintaining all the nutrients. Bananas are a great base for a smoothie. Just take a ripe banana, unpeel, cut it into slices, and put it in a ziplock freezer bag for a few hours. When you are ready to make your smoothie it will be ready to go! What I also love about smoothies is that you can add ingredients to your liking. So no one smoothie is the same. Here is a simple, quick, healthy and delicious smoothie recipe.

Blueberry Banana

Smoothie

Ingredients:

1 ripe banana, f  rozen and cut into chunks

1/2 cup fresh or frozen organic blueberries

1 cup organic almond or rice milk, or low fat organic milk

Optional Ingredients:

1 TBSP almond butter

2 TBSP soaked Chia seeds

2 TBSP Cacao powder

Add frozen bananas, blueberries and choice of milk into a blender. You may want to try any of the ingredients above for an adding nutrient booster. Now let's talk about the ingredients and health benefits. Blueberries are a great source of antioxidants, vitamin C and fiber. Bananas are packed with potassium. The almond butter will make the smoothie thicker and more dense. Almonds are a good source of calcium, magnesium and protein. Chia seeds when soaked become gelatinous, giving your smoothie a rich consistency. Chia seeds are packed with Omega-3 fatty acids, magnesium, and fiber. Cacao powder can be added for a boost of flavor along with magnesium and iron.

Blend to desired consistency, pour and enjoy!
